About Me

I live in St. Kilda, Melbourne, with my lovely wife Arzu. I started this Photoblog in July 2005 as a way to display my work.

Earlier this year I earned a Diploma in Professional Photography at the Washington School of Photography, where I learnt many fantastic techniques and made some wonderful friends. I also took a few classes at the ICP and the Harlem School of the Arts in New York and may well continue my education here in Melbourne.

What's a Split Filter?

When using multi-grade papers, as most people who are still printing B&W by hand do, an opportunity exists to have a lot of control over the highlights and shadows using a technique called split filtering. Essentially you make two exposures on the paper using two different filters - usually the highest (5) and lowest contrast (00). It allows a lot of control, and can be more precise and repeatable than dodging and burning, especially when used in conjunction with flashing.

Interestingly, the process is similar to working with Curves or Levels in Photoshop.

Equipment

I work with a variety of cameras: a Nikon F100, Contax T3, Hasselblad 500CM, Minolta Autocord and a recent purchase - a Canon Powershot S70.

I scan the 35mm film with a Canon FS4000 film scanner and Vuescan software. I did a single of a batch of 6x6 film using a flatbed Epson scanner. I am considering buying the new 4990 for this purpose. I'm pretty astounded with the Powershot's images, with the exception that it's difficult to blur the background - something about a small sensor.
